Community Organisation Disaster Adaptation Project (CODA)

Community Organisation Disaster Adaptation Project (CODA)

The project is an innovative initiative designed to fortify disaster preparedness and response within local communities.

CODA’s primary goal is to enhance the resilience of communities by fostering a culture of preparedness. This involves:

  • Engaging with and advocating to Emergency Services and Government agencies to integrate community voices and NGO perspectives into disaster response planning.

  • Collaborating with NGOs and businesses that support vulnerable community members to implement a Person-Centred Emergency Preparedness (P-CEP) program.

  • Encouraging community-wide conversations to ensure all residents have a well-considered emergency plan.

What challenges will the project address?

The aim to give all our residents the knowledge and tools that they need to be better prepared for any emergency will lead to better outcomes for themselves and the community at large.      We will aim to bring the emergency services together with community groups to give a better understanding of the complex problems faced on both sides in any emergency situation.

How will this work?

We will be working with different NGO’s, Emergency Service agencies, and Government agencies to support vulnerable community members across both the Bega Valley and Eurobodalla shires. Our goal is to help vulnerable community members, clients and staff in care organisations, and carers and the person they are supporting at home to be better prepared with the knowledge and tools needed to navigate emergencies effectively. CODA aims to equip residents across Bega Valley and Eurobodalla Shire Councils, as well as six other regions in New South Wales (NSW).

One of the tools that will be used is the Person-Centred Emergency Preparedness (P-CEP) planning tool. P-CEP has been co-designed with people who live with a disability, Sydney University and the QLD Government. P-CEP uses four steps to increase emergency preparedness as well as visual aids such as the capability wheel to identify strengths and support needs in everyday life.

Funding

Funding for the CODA project is from the NSW Reconstruction Authority and the NSW Council of Social Services (NCOSS).   We will be delivering the project across both Bega Valley and Eurobodalla shires over the next 2 years.
