 About Tai Chi:

Originating in ancient China, Tai Chi is one of the most effective exercises for the health of mind and body.

The movements are slow and gentle, and the degree of exertion can be easily adjusted, making it suitable for people of all levels of ability.

The essential principles include mind integrated with the body; fluidity of the movements; control of breathing; and mental concentration. The central focus is to enable the Qi (pronounced Chi) or life force to flow smoothly and powerfully throughout the body.

The Health Benefits of Tai Chi Include:

  1. Increased flexibility and muscle strength.
  2. Greater fitness.
  3. Better body posture.
  4. Integration of body, mind and spirit.
  5. Improved flow of Qi (life energy).
  6. Assists in Falls Prevention.

The Tai Chi for Arthritis Program is based on the Sun Style which is the most recent of the 4 major styles.

Qigong is another ancient Chinese practice that enhances health and relaxation.

Qi is the life energy within you, flowing through specific channels called meridians. It is a combination of the innate Qi you are born with, the Qi absorbed through your digestive system from food and water, and the Qi acquired from the air you breathe.

The storage house of Qi is the Dan-tian; a small area situated 3 finger breadths below the belly button.

Dr Lam worked with a team of Tai Chi experts, medical specialists and education experts to create easy to learn, safer and more effective Tai Chi forms for older people. Thus, was born the Tai Chi for Arthritis program.

 About Sue:

Sue Hinson has always had an interest in Tai Chi but wasn't sure how to begin. Sue had seen an advertisement in the local paper asking for volunteers to be trained in a Tai Chi for Arthritis Program. The program was being run by Southern NSW Local Health District. In exchange for the training I would run Tai Chi classes, for older people, in Eden. The more I got involved with this program the more I found there was a definite need to provide access, within the community, to improving the

of the older members of the community. She runs her class on a Friday morning at the Blue Sea View room. After having a busy week working, she uses this time for her own relaxation as well as helping others improve their fitness. My class has been running for over 12 months now and everyone is keen to keep going. Sue has had feedback from her members about the Tai Chi to say that their balance, posture and co-ordination are improving.
